Best Available Techniques (BAT) for preventing and controlling Industrial Pollution

Best Available Techniques (BAT) have become a crucial policy tool for the protection of both the environment and human health by preventing and controlling the emission of industrial pollutants. In the 1960s, the phrase "best available techniques" (BAT) initially became popular. Its main purpose is to prevent industrial pollution and to provide requirements for Integrated Environmental Permits for lager industrial operations. The Best Available Technology (BAT) is the technology approved by legislators or regulators for meeting output standards for a particular process. BAT encompasses technological, technical, and administrative solutions intended to reduce waste and ensure high resource and energy efficiency (EE) in production processes. BAT for a given industrial sector is described in reference documents called BREFs (Best Available Techniques Reference documents).

GHG Reduction Potential

The term "best available techniques" (BAT) refers to cutting-edge and well-proven methods for preventing and controlling industrial emissions as well as the wider environmental impact brought on by industrial installations. These methods are created at a scale which makes them technically and economically feasible for use. More and more governments are using BAT or similar concepts as a means to identify and set technically driven emission limit values (ELVs) and other conditions in environmental permits for industrial installations. The range of GHG reduction potential is difficult to quantifiy due to the high amount of different methods and techniques.
