Catalysts accelerate chemical reactions without being consumed. They lower the activation energy which is needed for a chemical reaction to take place. Conventional catalysts often contain rare metals and are toxic or non-renewable. Biocatalysts are usually enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions under mild reaction conditions which include water as a solvent or other organic solvents. A big advantage of biocatalysts is that chemical compounds can be synthesized with high purity. Biocatalysts are used among other compounds to synthesize therapeutic agents.
