Best Practice: Life Cycle Metrics Guideline

Life Cycle Metrics Guideline

As the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) states, metrics are vital to make informed decisions. Metrics enable companies to understand, improve and evaluate the environmental impact and benefits of their products. The guidance here presented, has been developed as part of the Reaching Full Potential (RFP) Chemical Sector Project, by WBCSD. The objective of the Life Cycle Metrics for Chemical Products guidance is to support the consistent and credible communication of a product’s environmental footprint by the chemical sector. The guidance proposes a global framework to align life cycle metrics for determining the footprint of chemical products based on state-of-the-art LCA developments and methodologies. Similar is the approach of Live Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) using harmonised Internatioanal Standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

GHG Reduction Potential

The guidance is linked to the GHG Protocol. Together with carbon accounting and life cycle metrics, potential reduction factors can be identified when analyzing a particular supply chain or product. Not a single potential reduction can be estimated but existing case studies and databases on chemical products life cycle analysis indicate average impacts as well as overall potentials for GHG emissions reduction.
