Plastic-to-fuel (PTF) employs the use of heat, pressure, and/or chemical solvents to break plastic waste down into liquids or gases that can be burned as fuel. Fuel conversion from plastic waste is regarded as a promising strategy for its disposal and energy utilization. By controlling the breakdown of chemical bonds, plastic wastes can be transformed into desired fuels.

Plastic waste is a huge global problem. Because of its durability, plastic waste accumulates and gets trapped in landfills and oceans.About 300 million tons of plastic waste is generated every year, only 9% is recycled. The plants that convert waste into fuel produce fuel from combustible materials such as non-recyclable paper, plastics, wood waste and textiles, all of which are either difficult or impossible to recycle. This prevents these materials from ending up in a landfill.
