Power-to-X (PtX)
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) defines Power-to-X (PtX) as a process that converts water, renewable energy and CO2 / N2 into hydrocarbon products and ammonia. It is an umbrella term which encompasses generating energy, namely power-to-gas, power-to-liquid, power-to-fuel, power-to-chemicals and power-to-heat. The definition shows that the X in PtX stands for a variety of products, processes, technologies and applications. It also includes the production of waxes, chemicals, pharmaceutical feedstocks and many more.

GHG Reduction Potential
The GHG reduction potential depends on several aspects. Main influences are: The electricity source and its amount of full load hours, the CO2 source (Direct air capture, biogenic sources, industrial point sources), and the water provision. (When powering the PtX process by grid mix electricity with a high share of fossil energy carriers, the GHG emissions are higher than with the conventional fossil-based production of hydrocarbons).
