Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs)

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) are a common technology used to eliminate Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Hazardous Pollutants (HAPs) or solvents, GHG emissions, and other toxic components. In the chemical industry, the RTO plays an important role to remove undesired substances from exhaust air. In general, the RTO uses high temperatures (~816 oC) to oxidize air pollutants from industrial exhaust streams turning them into less polluting substances before they are released into the atmosphere. A regular RTO combines temperature, residence time, turbulent flows, and oxygen to convert pollutants into CO2 and H2O.

GHG Reduction Potential

Regenerative thermal oxidizers are ideal for process streams with high airflow and low VOC content, achieving 99%+ VOC destruction. It is even possible for an RTO to operate without any additional fuel consumption if the VOC concentration in the process is >3-4% lower explosive limit (LEL).
