Solvents

Solvents are important in most industrial and domestic applications. Solvents are substances that can dissolve a solute. Solvents can be liquid, gaseous, solid, or supercritical. Solvents can be used to clean chemical equipment, purify chemical compounds, and dissolve chemical substances to allow the chemical reaction to occur. There are several hazardous and toxic solvents that harm the environment and humans and have not yet been replaced by non-hazardous and environmentally safe alternatives. There are chemical approaches to create routes of chemical reactions that don't need any solvents or at least less. The impact of solvent losses and emissions drives efforts to minimise them or to avoid them completely has become a major focus of green chemistry, giving rise to the idea of the ‘green’ solvent.

Assuming full implementation of current technology, emissions in the solvents sector could be reduced by up to 6 MtCO2e in 2030. This accounts for 0.12% of the 4,615 MtCO2e in global reduction potential in 2030. Also, by reducing fossil as feedstock for solvent production and switching to biobased feedstock or deep eutectic solvents (DES) for chemical reactions.
