The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) contributed to the United Nations Chemicals and Waste Management Study Programme, organised by UNITAR in Geneva. The programme brought together professionals from around the world to strengthen capacities in international chemicals and waste governance through expert lectures, technical workshops, and interactive discussions.

A Systemic Approach to Chemicals and Waste Management
As part of the programme, Paola Bustillos (ISC3) delivered the session "Sustainable Chemistry: From Principles to Practice," introducing Sustainable Chemistry as a systemic approach that supports the transition towards safer, more circular, and sustainable chemicals and waste management. The session gave participants a foundation for understanding how Sustainable Chemistry principles can be translated from theory into practice.
Learning from Real-World Innovation
Participants explored the practical application of Sustainable Chemistry through two startup case studies:
- ClimEtSan-OnTheGround, showcasing circular solutions for climate-smart sanitation and agriculture, demonstrating how waste streams can be transformed into valuable resources while addressing climate resilience.
- AppCyclers, demonstrating how digital innovation can advance circular e-waste management, offering a model for how technology can close material loops in the electronics sector.
The case studies showcased practical applications of Sustainable Chemistry and enabled participants to discuss their contributions to the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability for each start-up.
Applying Principles to Policy and Innovation
An interactive group exercise enabled participants to apply Sustainable Chemistry principles to real-world policy and innovation challenges, encouraging them to think critically about how these approaches could be adapted to their own regulatory and institutional environments.
Strengthening Global Cooperation
ISC3's contribution highlighted the importance of capacity building and international cooperation in advancing Sustainable Chemistry and supporting the global transition towards the sound management of chemicals and waste. By engaging with professionals from diverse countries and sectors, ISC3 continues to build the cross-border networks and shared knowledge base needed to accelerate this transition worldwide.
