New Synthesizer Podcast Episode

Featuring ISC3 Policy Director Anna Isabel Becker

We are excited to share that ISC3 Policy Director Anna Isabel Becker was the guest of the tenth and final episode (for now) of the Synthesizer Podcast – a podcast series that explores, together with leading experts, the background and challenges of the chemical transformation towards Sustainable Chemistry.

Please note: This episode is available in German only.

In this episode, Anna Isabel Becker gives listeners a deep dive into our work, our global activities, and our role in driving the transformation of the chemical sector. She discusses how ISC3 operates at the interface of policy, innovation, education, and communication, and how it supports capacity building for more sustainable chemical governance—particularly in the Global South, where inadequate safety and environmental standards continue to pose major risks to health and ecosystems.

As an experienced policy strategist, Anna shares insights into key international initiatives, including:

  • The development of a Science Policy Panel (SPP), envisioned as a global chemicals council,
  • Youth engagement formats,
  • And the UN Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC), adopted in 2023.

With a background in international relations, European policy, and strategic communication, Anna Isabel Becker joined ISC3 in 2021 and brings both practical and academic expertise from institutions such as the German Foreign Office and the European Parliament.

However, ISC3 wasn’t just a guest on episode 10 of the Synthesizer Podcast:

  • Dr. Christopher Blum and Dr. Klara Winkler, experts in international chemicals management at the German Environment Agency (UBA) — which, along with the BMUV (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection), commissions the ISC3 — appeared in episode 9 to discuss the UBA’s systematic efforts to promote a sustainable chemical transformation.
  • Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Chemistry at Leuphana University and founding director of the ISC3 Research & Education Hub (2017–2024), joined episode 2 to explore the differences between Green and Sustainable Chemistry and the vital role chemists play in enabling this transition.
