Spotlight: Sustainable Building & Sustainable Chemistry

Sustainable Concrete and International Cooperation

Recap

The third session was on "Sustainable Concrete and International Cooperation" and covered projects from Argentina, Ghana and other African countries that applied innovative approaches to resource-efficient design in the concrete industry. The session was moderated by Jens Krol (ISC3) and Cecilia Wandiga (CSTI).

Stefan Landauer (GIZ) proposed a model approach to decarbonize the Argentine cement industry. The GIZ project IREK II aims at promoting resource efficiency and climate protection in G20 emerging economies, focusing on material efficiency of abiotic materials in industrial processes. He also presented highlights of the policy paper, which include measures to reduce emissions and alleviate environmental pressures, and create employment opportunities in new sectors that facilitate integration into the labour market.

Wolfram Schmidt (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung- und prüfung) highlighted the disparity in rural and urban development in Africa and proposed material technologies to improve rural livelihoods alongside urban growth. Various technologies and value chains were discussed, including a case study on cassava waste usage in Nigeria.

In conclusion, maintaining the status quo is not a viable choice. Both presenters stressed the urgent need and importance of taking action. The aim is to transform the entire construction market, ensuring its readiness for the forthcoming challenges.
