Recap
The second session revolved around the critical issue of hazardous chemicals. Offering a scientific perspective, Dr. Kennedy Olale and Prof. Olivier Jolliet shared insights, while UNEP presented an ongoing project dedicated to the elimination of those hazardous chemicals. The session was moderated by Jens Krol (ISC3) and Cecilia Wandiga (CSTI).
Dr. Kennedy Olale (Kisii University/CSTI) gave a deeper insight into "PFCs and PFAs in water proofing materials", presenting case studies from various African countries and highlighting associated risks. His examination emphasized the significance of understanding the environmental and health consequences of PFCs and PFAs, inspiring responsible usage and sustainable alternatives.
Eloise Touni (UNEP) and Colin Hannahan (UNEP) presented the Integrated Programme on Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Supply Chains, which is a UNEP programme that promotes sustainability in the fashion and construction industries. The speakers talked about the programme's rationale and components, and how it aims to create transformational change.
Prof. Olivier Jolliet (Technical University Denmark) delved into the implications of "Human health and ecosystem impacts of chemicals in building materials and paints". The proposed approach and use of USEtox was highlighted as a strong foundation for prioritising chemicals and products of greatest concern, and thus informing more sustainable building product developments. The discussion emphasised the need for further investigations and stricter regulations for high-risk chemicals.
In his second presentation, he talked about "Coursera MOOC on Chemicals in consumer products" and underlined its importance, as it enables comprehensive assessment of the impacts of chemicals in products across the supply chain.
Their presentations covered a wide range of critical topics, from the identification and evaluation of hazardous substances using the USEtox programme to the need to avoid their negative effects, highlighting the importance of tackling this issue for a safer and healthier future.
