Recap
The session on "EU Assessment Framework: Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design" with German stakeholders was a closed session on the fourth SPOTLIGHT: Policy & Stakeholder Dialogue. This interactive workshop allowed stakeholders to provide input and feedback on Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD), a key element in transitioning to the EU Green Deal for climate neutrality, zero pollution, and circular economy. The aim of this workshop was to publicise the draft assessment framework for inherently safe and sustainable chemicals and materials among national stakeholders, to call for practical application, as well as to invite to share experiences and contributions with the European Commission.
The discussion revolved around the essential inquiries regarding the applicability of the evaluation framework, both its strengths and limitations. It delved into the crucial aspects pertaining to research and development, as well as the significance of effective implementation in industrial practice. Furthermore, the discussion provided comprehensive recommendations for advancing the framework further.
The discussion engaged stakeholders from different national associations, companies, research institutions, universities, who offered invaluable perspectives on the topic, enriching the discourse. Their contributions enabled the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current status, opinions, positions, and overall sentiment regarding the topic of SSbD. Participants shared their perspectives and started the discussion ahead of the upcoming ICCM5 in 25-29 September 2023 in Bonn.
